Thursday, governor Tom Wolf urged the legislature to pass a tax on Marcellus shale drillers.

While PA is second in the nation for natural gas production, it’s the only major state without a severance tax.

Wolf says the fairest and simplest solution to the current budget challenge is a severance tax.

“I’m calling on house republicans to get back to work, finish the job, get us that severance tax, get the schools we deserve, have the save level playing field the other states that produce gas are on,” said Wolf.

Wolf says because so much of the severance tax will be paid by customers outside Pennsylvania, it will have a minimal effect on utility bills.
